Desire vs. witness
The essence of the Upanishad: “The moment desire arises, be a witness to it.” Do not cultivate it; do not suppress it. When one becomes a witness, desire naturally weakens and disappears through neglect; peace naturally blossoms in its place.
Just as a coin has two sides, desire and witness are two manifestations of the same consciousness. When we focus on one side of the coin, we miss the other side’s existence and value. When we focus only on the desire form of consciousness, which is kinetic energy, we don’t know the state of witness or pure consciousness, which is its potential energy.
When the experiential knowledge that consciousness, like a coin, has two dimensions is revealed to one by the grace of the Guru, he is able to stand as a witness to it the very moment desire arises. In that state, desire is neither cultivated nor suppressed. By simply being a witness, desire loses its power; natural peace and peace blossom in its place.

“ஆசையும், சாட்சியும்.”
உபநிடதத்தின் சாராம்சம்: “ஆசை எழும் கணமே, அதற்குச் சாட்சியாக இரு.” அதை வளர்க்காதே; அதை அடக்காதே. ஒருவன் சாட்சியாக ஆகும்போது, ஆசை இயல்பாகவே பலவீனமடைந்து, புறக்கணிப்பினால் மறைந்துவிடுகிறது; அதன் இடத்தில் சாந்தி இயல்பாகவே மலர்கிறது.
ஒரு நாணயத்திற்கு இரண்டு பக்கங்கள் இருப்பது போல, ஆசையும் சாட்சியும் ஒரே உணர்வின் இரண்டு வெளிப்பாடுகள் ஆகும். நாம் நாணயத்தின் ஒரு பக்கத்தில் கவனம் செலுத்தும்போது, மறுபக்கத்தின் இருப்பையும் மதிப்பையும் இழந்துவிடுகிறோம். இயக்க ஆற்றலாகிய ஆசை என்னும் உணர்வின் வடிவத்தில் மட்டுமே நாம் கவனம் செலுத்தும்போது, அதன் நிலை ஆற்றலாகிய சாட்சி அல்லது தூய உணர்வு நிலையை நாம் அறிவதில்லை.
ஒரு நாணயத்தைப் போல உணர்வுக்கும் இரண்டு பரிமாணங்கள் உண்டு என்ற அனுபவ ஞானம் குருவின் அருளால் ஒருவனுக்கு வெளிப்படும்போது, ஆசை எழும் கணமே அவனால் அதற்குச் சாட்சியாக நிற்க முடிகிறது. அந்த நிலையில், ஆசை வளர்க்கப்படுவதும் இல்லை, அடக்கப்படுவதும் இல்லை. வெறுமனே சாட்சியாக இருப்பதன் மூலம், ஆசை தன் சக்தியை இழக்கிறது; அதன் இடத்தில் இயற்கையான சாந்தியும் அமைதியும் மலர்கின்றன.
