Tat Tvam Asi — That Thou Art!
In the Hindu Vedic tradition, the sections compiled specifically to explain the deeper meanings of Vedanta are known as the Upanishads. Among them, four great statements are revered as the pinnacle of Vedantic wisdom.

One of these, found in the Chandogya Upanishad, associated with the Samaveda, is the Mahavakya:

“Tat Tvam Asi” — तत् त्वम् असि
Its direct meaning is:
Tat — That
Tvam — You
Asi — Are
Thus:
“You are That.”

The Expanded Meaning of “That”:
Here, the word “That” does not refer merely to a particular object, form, or individual person.

It may be understood as pointing to that Supreme Reality which remains before names and forms arise and even after they disappear.

In all living beings, including humanity, beyond the distinctions of name and form, there shines the pure awareness. That is “That.”

In the three dimensions of time — past, present, and future — and through the three states of human experience — waking, dreaming, and deep sleep — what remains unchanged is that fundamental awareness.

Even before a person is born and given a name, and even after that person’s name and form have disappeared, the truth of “being” remains.
That which remains — is “That.”

Truth and Ignorance:
As emphasized in the teachings of the great saint Sri Shirdi Sai Baba, one may spiritually understand the Supreme Reality as the pure awareness beyond name and form, present within all living beings.

Yet, instead of recognizing that pure awareness within, a human being identifies with the temporary name given to him or her.

“I am this name; I am this body; I am this life” — thus one defines oneself.

In doing so, one forgets that which is eternal and mistakes that which is impermanent for the Self.

To remain liberated by one’s very nature, yet not know it, and instead imagine oneself to be caught in the cycle of birth and death — this is the greatest wonder of all!

The Experience of True Knowledge

When a person begins to realize:

“I am not merely this name and form; I am the pure awareness that knows them,”

the true meaning of the Mahavakya “Tat Tvam Asi” begins to reveal itself within.

The Supreme Self that one seeks is not somewhere else.

What is sought as “That” is present within the very pure awareness experienced as “I.”

Thayumanavar Swamigal expresses this beautifully in his Chidambara Rahasyam (Aakara Bhuvanam) verse:

“ஆனாலும் இதன்பெருமை எவருக்கு எவர் சொல்வார்
அதுவானால் அதுவாவர் அதுவே சொல்லும்.”

“Yet, who can tell another of its greatness?
One who becomes That, becomes That;
That alone reveals itself.” – Verse 22

“One who becomes That, becomes That” —
Simply speaking about That does not make it known.

Only through the experience of becoming established as That does “That” reveal its own greatness by itself.

This is the spiritual invitation contained in “Tat Tvam Asi”:

The Supreme Reality you seek is not separate from you.
You yourself are That.

Beyond name…
Beyond form…
Beyond time…
Beyond states of experience…

That pure awareness which remains unchanged
is “That.”
That Thou Art!
Tat Tvam Asi.
