Pranan + Nāmam = Prāṇāyāmam

All human beings function through three bodies, the gross body (physical body), the subtle body and the causal body.
The gross body is experienced in the waking state, the subtle body in the state of dreams and the causal body in the state of deep sleep. These three states are born and die in continuous cycles, and ordinary life is lived in their changing nature.
But besides these three, there is one eternal divine principle, one subtle body of pure consciousness that is ever-present in every being. It is constant and silently supports all states, without coming or going with them.
Throughout life human beings breathe in harmony with the gross, subtle and causal bodies. The mystery of Prāṇa, the life force that transcends these three states, represents a deeper enigma that remains largely unknown.
The difference between breathing exercises and Prāṇāyāma is important here.
Each breath naturally produces a sound. By the grace of the Guru, this sound is disclosed as the sacred Nāma (Divine Name). The conscious adjustment of the Nāma with the movement of Prāṇa makes them one. This is Prāṇāyāma, the true union of Prāṇa and Nāma.
Practices which merely control the breath, without the living consciousness of the Divine Name, are only breathing exercises. They may be beneficial for body and mind, but they do not reveal the deeper spiritual reality.
There is a great change when one lives in harmony with the ever-unchanging prana and its divine name instead of with the changing form and its assigned name. Gradually the ‘false I’ identifying with the waking, dreaming, deep sleep states and physical, subtle and causal bodies fades and disappears.
As this false identity falls away, one rests in the Fourth State (Turiya), beyond the changing experiences of waking, dreaming and deep sleep. This faint sense of individuality is finally overcome, even this one.
Then shines the highest reality, Pure Shivam. There is no longer a separate “I”. Only the eternal, self-luminous “I” remains, not as the individual ego, but as the one undivided Reality.
This is the True Self. Here is the one eternal “I am not, yet I am”.
