The Distortion of Curiosity
Generally, curiosity naturally resides in every human being. Yet, through curiosity, it is impossible to remain attached to one thing permanently. To leave one thing and become attached to another, continually moving from one to the next—that is the nature of curiosity.
In truth, it is the power of one’s own pure awareness that manifests as curiosity.
But this is where the distortion of curiosity begins.
Curiosity does not turn toward the knowing of one’s own pure awareness, which exists in a formless state. Instead, it becomes entangled in the sights, objects, and experiences that arise through the very power of that same awareness.
One scene appears—and curiosity grasps it.
Then another scene appears—and curiosity jumps to it. And then another…
Thus, it keeps wandering endlessly from one scene to the next. Yet no scene ever provides it with lasting satisfaction. Why?
Because what curiosity is truly seeking is not a scene; it is seeking its own source.
Curiosity, having emerged as the power of pure awareness, has become trapped in the manifestations that arise through it. In doing so, it has forgotten to turn back toward the source of pure awareness from which it itself has arisen.
Therefore, instead of wandering behind the countless changing scenes of life, if we turn curiosity toward its own source by asking the following:
“Who is it that is aware of this scene?”
…then we may discover that although the scenes keep changing, the awareness that knows them remains unchanged.
It is at that moment that curiosity ceases to be a movement in search of external objects and becomes the knowing of its own source.
In truth, because of this distortion of curiosity, every human being keeps missing the rare opportunity to know their own source and reunite with it.
There is no need to try to destroy curiosity.
Through developing interest in the Sadguru through their devotion and service, the distortion of curiosity can be corrected, and through the grace of the Guru, curiosity can be turned back toward its own source.
