The Secret of the Embrace: Prāṇa and the Expansion of Awareness:
Have you ever wondered why we feel refreshed only after sleep? Hidden within this everyday experience is a profound secret about the subtle relationship between the body and prāṇa, the vital life force.
Prāṇa and the Body: A Paradox:
The prāṇa within us has the inherent capacity to expand awareness. The physical body, however, tends to limit or contract that awareness.
While we are awake, the body remains continuously engaged with the prāṇa. As a result, the higher awareness inherent in prāṇa becomes conditioned by bodily sensations and sensory experiences. Scattered attention among worldly activities prevents us from experiencing the full vitality and illuminating power of prāṇa.
Deep Sleep: The Secret of Renewal:
What happens during deep sleep?
In deep sleep, prāṇa continues to embrace and sustain the body completely. However, unlike the waking state, there is no constant sensory struggle or mental distraction. Free from these disturbances, the awareness inherent in prāṇa permeates the body, restoring, harmonizing, and rejuvenating it.
This is why we awaken from deep sleep feeling refreshed, renewed, and energized.
Yoga in the Waking State: The Embrace That Ends Suffering:
Should this profound experience remain confined only to sleep? Certainly not.
What happens if a person consciously learns to remain connected with the embracing presence of prāṇa even while fully awake?
The body is gradually elevated beyond its ordinary condition into a higher state of being. This is what the Bhagavad Gītā refers to as “yoga.”
The yoga of one who understands the harmony of sleep and wakefulness is this practice: just as the body is embraced and rejuvenated by prāṇa during deep sleep, if one consciously maintains that same communion with prāṇa while awake, that very yoga removes suffering and transforms karma into sacred action.
Simply put, just as prāṇa is imperrishable, a body that remains continuously embraced and sustained by prāṇa also transcends the ordinary limitations of decay. This exalted state of awakened awareness becomes the seed of an immortal life—not merely physical longevity, but the realization of one’s deathless nature.
May we understand this subtle secret and cultivate harmony between prāṇa and the body, not only in sleep but also throughout our waking life.
“Continuous enthusiasm is a sign of clear knowledge.”
