Vijñāna Bhairava Tantra – Verses 9, 10 & 11
Direct Awareness: The Living Consciousness of “I”:
The Vijñāna Bhairava Tantra repeatedly points toward direct, immediate, non-conceptual awareness—our own essential consciousness, known not as an object of thought but by direct experience.
How is this consciousness ordinarily experienced?
It appears through three modes:
Body consciousness: awareness identified with the body. Since the body is an object of perception, this awareness is object-oriented.
Intellectual consciousness: Awareness functioning through the mind and intellect. Here too, understanding depends upon concepts and objects of thought.
Vital consciousness (Prana-consciousness) : Beneath both body and intellect flows the living force that animates every breath. Here, awareness is not grasped as an idea but recognized directly as the ever-present life that moves the pranas.
In the contemplative practice, attention might be brought to the subtle sense of “I Am” which silently accompanies the movement between inhalation and exhalation. This is not the egoic “I” fabricated by thought but the living presence that vivifies life itself. It is to be heard within, felt directly, meditated upon—not imagined, not intellectually analyzed.
When attention rests in this immediate presence, awareness abides in its nature.
This is Bhairava Sthanam—the Abode of Bhairava.
This is Bhairava Stuthi—the Praise of Bhairava.
This is Bhairava’s Grace.
