There is a state beyond our efforts or effortlessness. Effort is necessary until that state is realized. – Ramana Maharshi
What could be the state that Ramana Maharishi is pointing out? That is stillness. As stated in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, “When in deep sleep he does not know, yet he is knowing, because knowing is inseparable from the Knower, because it is indestructible. But there is, then, no second thing, nothing else different from him that he could know.”
Accordingly, one who realizes that knowing is inseparable from the Knower can achieve a state of stillness. Since there is no other higher state existing apart from Stillness, efforts cease. Since this state is imperishable, it naturally becomes effortless; however, until one realizes the state of stillness, effort remains necessary.

நமது முயற்சிகள் அல்லது முயற்சியின்மைக்கு அப்பாற்பட்ட ஒரு நிலை உள்ளது. அந்த நிலை உணரப்படும் வரை முயற்சி அவசியம். – ரமண மகரிஷி
ரமண மகரிஷி சுட்டிக்காட்டும் நிலை என்னவாக இருக்க முடியும்? அதுதான் அமைதி என்னும் அசையா நிலை. பிருஹதாரண்யக உபநிஷத்தில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளபடி, “ஆழ்ந்த தூக்கத்தில் இருக்கும்போது அவருக்குத் தெரியாது, ஆனால் அவர் அறிந்திருக்கிறார், ஏனென்றால் அறிவு அறிபவரிடமிருந்து பிரிக்க முடியாதது, ஏனெனில் அது அழிக்க முடியாதது. ஆனால், அவரிடமிருந்து வேறுபட்ட வேறு எதுவும் இல்லை, அவரால் அறியக்கூடியது.”
அதன்படி, அறிபவரிடமிருந்து அறிதல் பிரிக்க முடியாதது என்பதை உணர்ந்த ஒருவர் அசையா நிலையை அடைய முடியும். அசையா நிலையை தவிர வேறு எந்த உயர்ந்த நிலையும் அடைய பெறுவதற்கு இல்லாததால், முயற்சிகள் இயல்பாகவே நின்று போய் விடுகிறது. இந்த நிலை அழியாதது என்பதால், அது இயல்பாகவே அது முயலாமையாக ஆகிவிடுகிறது; இருப்பினும், ஒருவர் இந்த அமைதி என்னும் அசையா நிலையை உணரும் வரை, முயற்சிகள் அவசியம்.
