Swami Vivekananda had a tendency of drinking a lot of water, and so, when he experienced edema in his legs, doctors urged him to cease drinking water. Others around him feared Swami Vivekananda would be unable to follow the doctor’s instructions. To everyone’s amazement, he instantly began strictly adhering to the doctor’s advice. When the others wondered how the situation was possible, Swami Vivekananda replied, “This body has always been my servant, and I am not a slave to it; instead, I am the master of it forever.
“This means that being the master of the body includes not only the body itself but also the mind that governs it, the intellect that governs the mind, the pranas that govern the intellect, and the bliss that governs the pranas. Any soul that is not a master to itself, which consists of these five types of koshas, is not free! Rather, it will remain enslaved to the five koshas ceaselessly; that is, it will continue to be reborn again and again.

“நீங்களே உங்களுக்கு எஜமானர்.”
“தனக்குத்தானே எஜமானனாக இல்லாத எந்த மனிதரும் சுதந்திரமானவர் அல்ல.” – -எபிக்டெட்டஸ் கிரேக்க தத்துவஞானி.
சுவாமி விவேகானந்தர் அதிகமாக தண்ணீர் அருந்தும் பழக்கமுடையவர், அவருக்கு கால்களில் வீக்கம் ஏற்பட்டபோது மருத்துவர்கள் தண்ணீர் அருந்துவதை குறைத்துக் கொள்ளும்படி அறிவுறுத்தினார்கள். சுற்றி இருந்த ஏனையவர்கள் சுவாமி விவேகானந்தரால் மருத்துவர்களின் அறிவுரையை கடைபிடிக்க இயலாது என்றே நம்பினார்கள். ஆனால் எல்லோரும் ஆச்சரியப்படத்தக்க வகையில் உடனேயே மருத்துவர்களின் அறிவுரையை முழுமையாக கடைப்பிடிக்க தொடங்கினார். இது எவ்வாறு சாத்தியமாகிற்று? என்று கூடியிருந்தவர்கள் கேட்டபோது, அதற்கு சுவாமி விவேகானந்தர் அளித்த பதில் “இந்த உடம்பு எனக்கு எப்போதும் பணியாள் தானே தவிர, நான் இந்த உடம்புக்கு அடிமை இல்லை என்றும், இந்த உடம்பிற்கு என்றென்றும் தானே எஜமானன் என்றும் பதில் அளித்தார்.”
அதாவது உடம்பிற்கு எஜமானன் என்றால் இவ்வுடம்பிற்கு மட்டுமல்ல, உடம்பை ஆளும் மனம், அம்மனதை ஆளும் புத்தி, புத்தியை ஆளும் பிராணங்கள், பிராணங்களை ஆளும் (சொற்ப) ஆனந்தம் ஆகிய இவ்வைந்து வித கோசங்களும் உள்ளடங்கிய தனக்குத்தானே எஜமானனாக இல்லாத எந்த ஆன்மாவும் சுதந்திரமானது அல்ல! மாறாக பஞ்ச கோசங்களுக்கு அடிமைப்பட்டுக் கொண்டே இருக்கும், அதாவது மீண்டும் மீண்டும் பிறந்து கொண்டே இருக்கும்.
