Nirvana Shatakam

Nirvana Shatakam

Sri Adisankara’s ‘Nirvana Shatakatam’ includes the idea of that ‘all in the universe is in the self of I. One approach to practicing it is:

I’m not part of space, but I am that. I am not a part of time, but I am that.

I’m not part of earth, but I am that; I’m not part of water, but I am that; I’m not part of air, but I am that; I’m not part of fire, but I am that.

I’m not part of vital breath, but I am that; I’m not part of the seer, but I am that; I’m not part of the hearer, but I am that; I’m not part of the perceiver, but I am that; I’m not part of the mind, but I am that; I’m not part of the knower, but I am that; I’m not part of the manifested bodies, but I am that; I’m not part of the unmanifested soul, but I am that.

I am not a part of food, but I am that; I am not a part of eater, but I am that; I am not a part of unifier, but I am that; I am not a part of energies, but I am that.

I’m not part of nothingness, but I am that; I’m not part of everything, but I am that; I’m not part of the truth, but I am that; I am not a part of virtues, but I am that; I’m not part of experience, but I am that.

I’m not part of Sadguru, Sages, Siddhas, or Prophets, but I am that; I’m not part of the cosmic power, but I am that; I’m not part of the grace, but I am that.

I’m not part of the divine edict, but I am that; I am not a part of the act, but I am that;

I’m not part of pure consciousness, but I am that; I’m not part of Shivam, but I am that; I’m not part of eternal light, but I am that.

Sufi saint Hazrat Rumi says, You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a drop.” Like that, I am not part of anything; instead, I am the whole in every particle.

If the seeker of wisdom continues to think about his identity in the manner described above, all false identities leave him, and he is drawn into the blissful intuition of the nirvana stage. That’s all
