Rumi Quote: “Last night my teacher taught me the lesson of Poverty: Having nothing and wanting nothing.”
Interpretation:
Before teaching wisdom, Rishi Astavakrar requested Guru Dakshina from King Janaka. When Janaka offered his entire Mithila kingdom instantly, the Rishi replied, It is not yours, and these goods belong to the Mithila people. By the way, the Janaka was taught the lesson of poverty: “having nothing.”
After completing the wisdom understanding, Rishi used his power to cause a fire incident in Mithila. Except for the king, Janaka, all of the students flee to protect their own property. When the Rishi asked why King Janaka was not responding to the fire incident, Janaka answered quickly that nothing was mine, and Janaka attained the lesson of poverty, “wanting nothing,” in this way.
